Business Sale Mentor
Selling a business can be stressful and expensive. If your business is worth over one million dollars, then you will probably pay $100,000 or more in fees, if you use a business broker, accountant, lawyer, and other professionals.
I can show you how to dramatically slash this cost by doing some of the work yourself. I can step you through the buy / sell process, while sharing inside knowledge from the business brokering industry.
As a former business broker, I know the secrets to successfully buying or selling a business. I will sit down with you and answer questions that you have about the buy / sell process. The great thing about this service is that you retain complete control over your decisions while having access to the knowledge that I have gained as a professional business broker.
Alternatively, I am available for short-term engagements to do some of the specialist work on your behalf. This might include determining options for the likely value of your business, drafting your business Information Memorandum, liaising with your accountant and lawyer, developing your Marketing Plan, vetting buyer enquiries, and coordinating the buy / sell process from inside your business.
My service includes:
> Sharing tips and tricks of the trade
> Showing you what you can (and can’t) do on your own
> Telling you exactly what to expect when buying or selling a business
> Showing you how to retain control over the business buy / sell process
> Sharing industry insights and providing independent comment, based on industry knowledge.
You will learn:
> Your buy / sell options
> How buyers and sellers think
> The different stages in the buy / sell process
> The different methods used to value a business
> When to use a business broker, accountant, lawyer and other specialists.
Who am I? I am a former business broker licensed under the REAA 2008, and a former business advisor with the Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce. I was part of the business advisory team at NZTE’s biz Information service (business.govt.nz) and with Business Mentors New Zealand. Since 1993 I have operated business incubators, managed high-growth programmes, taught entrepreneurship and marketing at tertiary level, and run a number of businesses.
Tell me what you need and we will build the solution together! It could be a one-off reality check, semi-regular 'coffee and chat' meetings or something more structured and formal. If you decide to go the full 'do it yourself' route then I can offer:
Option 1: Mentoring
One-to-one mentoring, while you prepare your business for sale.
You decide how regularly we meet. I provide a ‘hands off’ service, offering insights, answering questions, and providing an independent perspective to your buy / sell project. You retain full control over your business decisions.
This option is suitable for motivated vendors who want to take an active part in the buy / sell process and who want to minimise selling-related costs.
Option 2: Short-term engagement
I sit inside your business as a part-time employee, co-ordinating the buy / sell process in a hands-on capacity. This may include determining options for appraising the likely value of your business, identifying what you actually have to sell, drafting your Business Information Memorandum, liaising with your accountant and lawyer, developing your Marketing Plan, initial vetting of enquiries and coordinating the buy / sell process from inside your business.
This option is suitable for vendors who have limited time to invest in the buy / sell process but who still want to minimise selling-related costs.
